- -What we did in class:
- .
- - I Romani e i turisti. We practiced using scusi, c'è, ci sono, dov'è, dove sono, cerco, ho bisogno di.
- .
- - Words from page 118 Sempre, Spesso, Invece, Mai, Non mai. the safest place to put an adverb in a sentence is after the verb. "Non" comes before the verb.
- Prendi mai l'autobus?
- No. Non prendo mai l'autobus.
- Sì. Prendo spesso l'autobus.
- .
- - Review:
- Avere idioms.
- Lasciare, uscire, partire.
- .
- -Preposizioni: We added two new meanings for prepositions:
- besides "from" da can mean "at the place of". Da Mario. - Mario's house.
- besides "between" or "among", tra / fra can also mean "in..." in the sense of "The play begins in ten minutes."
- .
- -sapere, conoscere We did a quick intro to these verbs. Remember, both mean "to know" in Italian,
- Sapere means "to know how to..." or "to know..." a fact.
- Conoscere means "to know or be familiar with..." something or someone, or "to meet..." someone for the first time.
- If you can substitute the word "familiar with" when you're trying to translate "to know" from English to Italian, use conoscere instead of sapere.
- .
- -bene, buono Bene is an adverb, buono is an adjective. Bene doesn't agree (because it modifies a verb). Buono changes to agree with the noun it modifies. Sometimes the final "e" will be dropped from bene : As in Benvenuto. (or) Benvenuta.
- La torta è buona. (The cake is good.)
- Paula cuoce bene. (Paula bakes well.)
- .
- -Possession: Di chi è questo libro?
- È di Luisa. È il suo libro.
- Di chi è questa penna?
- È di Edoardo. È la sua penna.
- Notice how you can show passession using "di" plus the name of the person, or using the possessive adjective plus the noun. The difficult part for English speakers is to remember that the possessive adjective is really two words, and agrees with the noun, not with the gender of the possessor person.
