-verbi: ascoltare, aspettare, cercare, guardare, pagare. these take a preposition in English, but DO NOT take a preposition in Italian. Page 79.
ascoltare - to listen to...
aspettare - to wait for...
cercare - to look for...
guardare - to look at...
pagare - to pay for... (or to pay someone)
Pago i caffè. - I pay for the coffees.
Pago il cameriere. - I pay the waiter.

pensare a (followed by a noun) - to think about something (or somebody)
pensare di (followed by a an infinitive) - to plan on doing something

-sapere, conoscere: Sapere is to know a fact, or to know how to do something.
Conoscere is to be acquainted with a person or a place (also, to meet a person)

Conosco Venezia - I'm familiar with Venice.
So dov'è Venezia. - I know where Venice is.

-Compiti
1. Prepositions: di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra / fra. Read the pink handout, and underline any sentence or phrase that you're not sure you understand, on the side that starts "di- of ... Sono di Portland."
2. Memorize these phrases:
- Quanto Le devo? - How much do I owe you? (formal)
- Posso...? - May I...?
- Offro io! - My treat! (lit: "I offer")
3. Look at the "Dove" handout. (blue handout) . Also, I want you to study these words:
davanti a - in front of
dietro - behind
di fronte a - opposite, facing
accanto a - next to
attraverso - across
some of these are found on page 184
4. Prepositions. Study both charts on Page 159. Look at the chart of prepositions, and the chart of simple prepositions which are combined with the definite article. You can also review the definite article on pages 66 through 72. Do any of the exercises that appeal to you.
5. Modal verbs. Memorize the conjugations of potere, volere, dovere on page 190, and do the yellow handout: "Translate into Italian. Use dovere, potere, volere....". Check your answers on the back afterwards. For the very last sentence, the answer should be: Potete venire con noi.
6. Possessives , yellow handout. Do both sides. I'ts mostly about possessive adjectives with family members, although you'll notice that part E has some possessive with things. click here for the answers
