-Gli argomenti: The topics.
What we did in class, and more!

- Warm-up: "Com'è andata la settimana?" (How did the week go?)
Che cosa hai fatto la settimana scorsa? - What did you do last week?
Hoai ha lavorato in giardino. - Hoai worked in the garden.
Cindy è andata alla spiaggia, dove ha affittato una casa. - Cindy went to the beach, where she rented a house.
La figlia di Margherita è venuta a trovarla. - The daughter of Margherita came to see her.
...e abbiamo fatto molte altre cose interessanti. - ...and we did many other interesting things.

- Passato prossimo. We went over all the answers on the white handout "Oggi, ieri..." The verbs on the front used avere as the auxiliary, and the verbs on the back used essere as the auxiliary.

- To describe a scene in the past, or to talk about the weather in the past, you use a different verb tense than the passato prossimo. It's called the imperfetto. (imperfect) Here is what you need to know for now:
Faceva (third person singular of fare):
C'era (third person singular of esserci)
C'erano (third person plural of esserci)
examples:
Faceva bel tempo. - The weather was beautiful.
C'era molta gente. - There were a lot of people. (gente is singular in Italian!)
C'erano molte balene. - There were many whales.

- indirect object pronouns mi, ti, le, gli, Le, ci, vi, gli used with the verb "piacere".
"Mi piace..." - "I like..." (literally, "To me, is pleasing...")

    - Piacere

"Mi piace" when one thing is pleasing to you (to say you like something)

"Mi piacciono" when more than one thing is pleasing to you. (literally, "To me are pleasing...")

"Non mi piace" when one thing displeases you (to say you don't like something)

"Non mi piacciono" when more than one thing displeases you.

"Mi piace sciare" - I like to ski. (literally, "To me is pleasing to ski") "To ski" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of the verb "piacere". (do you remember the indirect object pronouns? mi, ti, le, gli, Le, ci, vi, gli)

    "Ti piace?" - Do you

"Le piace?" - Does she like it? (or) Do you (formal) like it?

"Gli piace?" - Does he like it? (or) Do they like it?

"Mi piacciono la festa e la musica." I like the party and the music. (literally, "To me are pleasing the party and the music.") The verb is plural because the subject is plural: "la festa e la musica" is the subject. "Mi" is the indirect object of "piacere".

In the passato prossimo, the verb piacere takes essere as its auxiliary, which means that the past participle has to agree with the subject.

Mi è piaciuto il film. (To me / was pleasing / the film) - I liked the film.

    Mi è piaciuta la festa.

    Mi sono piaciuti i film.

    Mi sono piaciute le feste.

You say "Piacere" when you meet someone.

    "Mi dispiace" when you're sorry

- "Alla stazione" You all did a good job reading your homework with the vocabulary for "At the train station". It was a two-way translation exercise (click here). We didn't have time to do it in class.

- "Tombola!" (Bingo)

- Parole da ricordare:
casino - mess
Che bel casino! - What a fine mess!
ieri sera - yesterday evening
Era divertente. - It was fun.
Ha senso. - It makes sense.
permettere - to permit
gratis - free
gratuito - free
prestare - to lend
prendere in prestito - to borrow
affittare - to rent a house, an apartment
noleggiare - to rent a car, a DVD, a bicycle
prenotare - to reserve

6. Presentazioni. Whoever wants to can make a mini-presentation during the final class/party. You can tell us (in Italian) a recipe for your dish, or talk about a place you've been or that you would like to visit. Share a poem, or a song...

7. (optional) There are two more Practice Sets that I wanted to get to this term: 46 and 47 on pages 138-140. Take a look at them if you have time. "Quanto, Quale, Molto, Tanto...".
