-Verbi: Notice what is different about the italian use of these verbs. Ascoltare (to listen to), aspettare (to wait for), cercare (to look for), guardare (to look at, to watch), pagare (to pay for). For example, in English, we say, "I listen to the song." In Italian, the verb "ascoltare" does not mean "to listen", it means "to listen to". Because these verbs already contain the idea of the prepositions "to" "for" or "at", you do not add a preposition in Italian!

On the other hand, the verbs domandare a (to ask)..., entrare in (to enter)..., giocare a (to play)..., telefonare a (to telephone)... require a preposition in Italian, whereas in English they do not!

The tense that we are learning is the present indicative. For all verbs in Italian, the present indicative is used extensively, and can be translated into English in several ways.
Let's take one verb as an example:
The phrase in English, "I am buying..." is expressed in Italian by just one word: "Compro..."
You can get into trouble if you try to translate word by word from English into Italian. Sometimes just one Italian word takes the place of several words in English.
The word "Compro..." can mean "I am buying..." or "I buy..." or "I will buy" or "I do buy..." depending on the context.
-are verbs ending in -care or -gare change their spelling to keep the sound of the g or c consistent for each person.
-ere verbs do not do this: verbs ending in -gere or -scere are pronounced with a hard g or c sound in the io and loro forms.

Here are a few -are verbs which have spelling changes to preserve the sound of the stem. Cercare (to look for), dimenticare (to forget), pagare (to pay for), mangiare (to eat)....

Cerco, cerchi, cerca. Cerchiamo, cercate, cercano

Dimentico, dimentichi, dimentica. Dimentichiamo, dimenticate, dimenticano

Pago, paghi, paga. Paghiamo, pagate, pagano.

Mangio, mangi, mangia. Mangiamo, mangiate, mangiano.

-aggettivi (adjectives) (Here is an explanation of material some of which we have touched on in class)
The usual place for an adjective is after a noun, especially adjectives of
  • color                                una ragazza bionda
  • form or shape                  un ragazzo alto
  • nationality                       un amico americano
 
Remember an adjective that ends in o has four forms (-o , -i , -a , -e)

for example, alto
È un ragazzo alto. - He is a tall boy.
È una ragazza alta. - She is a tall girl.
Sono due ragazzi alti. - They are two tall boys.
Sono due ragazze alte. They are two tall girls.

an adjective that ends in e has two forms: singular and plural (-e , -i)

For example: felice
È un ragazzo felice. - He is a happy boy.
È una ragazza felice. - She is a happy girl.
Sono due ragazzi felici. - They are two happy boys.
Sono due ragazze felici. They are two happy girls.

troppo caro - too expensive

Scusate, - Excuse me...(to more than one person)
di sera... - in the evening
di mattina... - in the morning
A che ora...? - At what time?
Alle cinque. - At five.
All'una. - At one.
fare un giro - to take a tour (lit. to make a tour)
fare una passeggiata - to take a walk (lit. to make a walk)

We haven't gone over these words in class yet, so see what you can figure out and bring your questions to class. (advanced students can try to answer the questions on the bottom half)

4. handout 20: We went over the words in the first column. click here for the audio version. See if you can use those words and some of the verbs and vocabulary we've learned so far, to translate the following sentences into English:
a. Vado in centro adesso.
b. Parlo con Luigi più tardi.
c. Prima, vado alla stazione. Dopo, vado al mare.
d. La prossima settimana, andiamo a Venezia.
e. È aperto, il ristorante? No, è chiuso.
f. Domani facciamo una passeggiata.

5. handout 21: Telling time. Do the front side of the handout. Read part 1, then do parts 2 and 3.

6. handout 22: Question words. Read the front, and do the matching exercises on the back.

7. handout 16 (from last week). Write out and say aloud as many times as you can, the conjugations of these verbs: cercare, pagare, conoscere, venire, mangiare, lasciare. Venire is the only one of these verbs that is really irregular. The others have spelling changes or change their sound.

8. When we were in the Piazza, we used only the first person singular: "I am..." "I am doing this" "I am doing that." Now, here are some of those same verbs in different "persons". See if you can translate:
  1. Siamo in piazza.
  2. Enrico sente la Dolce Vita.
  3. Guardate la gente?
  4. Bart entra nell'autobus.
  5. Loro fanno una foto.
  6. Chi paga il caffè?
  7. Trovo un buon ristorante.
  8. Sofia parla con amici.
  9. Ascoltiamo la musica.
  10. Bevi una birra? (bere is irregular)
  11. Maria compra una bicicletta.

8. (optional) Write out the conjugations for these verbs. They are all regular in the present tense. They will follow the pattern of the verbs on the front of handout 16.
-are verbs: arrivare, (to arrive), aspettare (to wait for), portare (to bring), comprare (to buy), trovare (to find)
-ere verbs: mettere (to put), perdere (to lose), prendere (to take), vedere (to see)
-ire verbs: partire (to depart), sentire (to feel, to hear)
-ire verbs (with "isc") capire (to understand), finire (to finish)
