-compiti (homework) is at the bottom of this page.

____________________________________________________

- Warm-up: MUTINY!! Andiamo piano piano, non fuggi fuggi. We will go more slowly from now on.

Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.

- Preposizioni: We practiced side 1 of the pink handout "Preposizioni" (handout #12) .

-Stare plus the gerund: (Present progressive tense)

To say that you’re doing something right now,  use   Stare + il gerundio

The gerund is formed by dropping the infinitive ending (-are, -ere, or –ire) and adding –ando for –are verbs and –endo for –ere and –ire verbs.

.The gerund endings are:

-ire         >         -endo

-ere         >         -endo

-are         >         -ando

Some verbs have irregular gerund forms:

bere  to drink

bevendo

porre  to put, to place

ponendo

dire  to say, tell

dicendo

produrre  to produce

producendo

fare  to do, make

facendo

 tradurre to translate

 traducendo

The gerund form does not change;  it always ends in –o.           examples:

In questo momento...

Sto bevendo.  I’m drinking.

Stiamo mangiando. We’re eating.

Stai parlando.  You’re talking.

State uscendo.  You (plural) are leaving.

Sta arrivando.  She’s arriving.  (he, you)

Stanno facendo un giro. They’re taking a trip.

Pronouns can come before stare or attached to the gerund:

.........I am looking for my book. - Sto cercando il mio libro.
.........I'm looking for it. - Lo sto cercando. Sto cercandolo.
.........Are they falling asleep? -   Stanno addormentandosi? Si stanno addormentando?
.

-Passato prossimo. We went over a few irregular past participles: fatto, aperto, bevuto, chiesto, chiuso, conosciuto. More are listed on page 216.

-Two verbs in a sentence: In English, you would say:
"I forgot to tell you..."
"I'm waiting to go..."
"I'm learning to speak Italian."
"We're trying to leave tomorrow."
"They're learning to play the violin."
"She's helping her mother wash the cat."

In Italian, when you have two verbs in a sentence, you conjugate the first one, sometimes add a preposition, then use the infinitive of the second verb. The first verb determines whether or not you use a preposition, and which preposition to use:
Voglio andare. - I want to go. (volere doesn't require a preposition before the infinitive)
Comincio a lavorare. - I'm starting to work. (cominciare takes "a" before the infinitive)
Finisco di pranzare. - I'm finishing eating lunch. (finire takes "di" before the infinitive)
You will just need to memorize these. See page 190.

Using two verbs in a sentence.

Conjugate the first verb, and use the infinitive for the second verb:

Preferisco camminare. -  I prefer to walk.

Some verbs don’t require a preposition:

preferire – to prefer to...

desiderare – to desire to...

sapere – to know how to...

dovere – must...

potere – may...

volere – to want to ...

Some verbs require the preposition a”  or “di” between them and the infinitive:

cercare di – to try to... Cerco di capire. - I'm trying to understand.

dimenticare di – to forget to... Ho dimenticato di andare. - I forgot to go.

aiutare a – to help to... Ho aiutato Maria a fare la spesa. - I helped Maria do the grocery shopping.

andare a – to go to...  Va a prenderla – He’s going to pick her up.

venire a – to come to...  Quando mi viene a trovare? – When are you coming to see me?

cominciare a – to begin to... Ho cominciato a lavorare. - I started working.
