____________________________________________________
-Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.
-Warmup: "Com'è andata la settimana?" "Cosa c'è di nuovo?" "La mia amica ha preparato una cena italiana." We practiced by asking each other how the week went, and we responded with some exclamations:
Che bello!
Che bella sorpresa!
Che brutta notizia!
- Imperfetto. We went over the two handouts from last week. Just remember that with essere, you can sometimes use either the imperfetto or the passato prossimo. If it's an event, use passato prossimo. If it's a description, use imperfetto. Sometimes, you can be thinking of what happened as either an event or a description:
Il concerto è stato bellissimo! (event)
Il concerto era bellissimo! (description)
- - Present progressive tense, past progressive tense. click here for last week's introduction and overview of Stare plus the gerund.
- - Past progressive: "Where were you on the night of..." (L'alibi)
- We practiced saying where we were and what we were doing at a specific moment.
- Cosa faceva in quel preciso momento?
- Ero in casa di amici. Stavo giocando a carte.
- Ero a teatro. Stavo ascoltando l'opera.
- -Volere in the conditional. A polite way to ask for something, or invite someone to do something.
- I would like, you would like...
- vorrei, vorresti, vorrebbe,__ vorremmo, vorreste, vorrebbero.
- Vorrebbe cenare con me?
- Vorremmo andare in centro adesso.
- Vorrei una birra per favore.
-Dialoghi: In albergo. We performed dialogues for each other in pairs.
-Una lettera d'Italia. Abbiamo letto una lettera che Teresa Seconda ha ricevuto dai suoi parenti.
- Parole da ricordare
-
Buongiorno. - Good day. (you can say this when meeting, or when leaving.)
Buona giornata. - "Have a good day!"
Buona sera. - Good evening. (you can say this when meeting, or when leaving.)
Buona serata. - "Have a good evening!"
Buona notte. - "Good night." (only when it's time to go to bed, or when leaving and it's late.)

-Compiti.
1. Stare plus the gerund: present progressive tense. Handout number 10: read the explanation, and do the exercises on the back. Check your answers on the back.
2. Imperfetto, passato prossimo. (white handout number 9: "Ricordi che risate?") Read the dialogue, underline all the verbs, and decide why they use imperfetto, and why they use passato prossimo.
3. Imperfetto, passato prossimo. (handout number 7.) Do the questions 1 through 9 in the second section. (page 129, 130). Once again, here is some helpful information. For these nine sentences, look at the second table below. (use this version of the table below, there was a typo in last week's version). All of the sentences 1 through 9 have one or two shorter actions in a row, happening during a longer action.
4. Listen to unit 14 on the CD.
5. Conoscere, sapere. Imperfetto? Passato prossimo? present tense? Look at page 201 of our text, and the side panel: "Nota Bene: sapere e conoscere". Or our ivory handout number 8 from last week "Deciding whether a verb..."
Translate these into Italian (using a form of conoscere or sapere):
a. I didn't know that Angela was a musician.
b. I met (for the first time) Mario.
c. They found out that their neighbor speaks Italian.
d. I knew Tizio.
e. I knew her before the war.
f. I know the city and its monuments.
g. He doesn't know how to swim.
h. I have known her for three years. (attenzione: da)
6. (optional) Leggete (read) Read and translate the recipes.
7. (optional) Cook the lasagne, bring to class.
