-Gli argomenti (the topics): What we did in class, and more.

-Warmup: "Nadine!" "Piacere!"
Che bella sorpresa!
Che peccato!

- in or a?
Remember, when you're going to a country, or you are in a country, the preposition is in
Vado in Italia.
Sono in Canada.
When you're going to a city, or you are in a city, the preposition is a
Vado a Roma.
Vado a Toronto.

(When you're going to an island: inquire locally).

- Imperfetto. We went over the homework from last week.

-Futuro. Italians use the future to make plans, to make predictions, to hypothesize, to make promises, and for the "periodo ipotetico" (If... then...)

- da plus time. To say that you have been doing something that you are still doing, you use da plus the present indicative.
Da quanto tempo è in Italia, signora? Sono in Italia da un mese. (How long have you been in Italy? I've been in Italy for one month.)

- Parole da ricordare
nascondere - to hide
giochiamo a nascondino - Let's play hide-and-seek.
accento grave - the accent mark which descends: In Italian it has three possible functions:
1. changes the pronunciation of e to è
2. distinguishes between two words otherwise identical: da (from) dà (gives)
3. indicates the stressed syllable: probabilità
accento acuto - the accent mark which ascends: perché
Dove ci incontriamo? - Where shall we meet?
incontrarsi (used reciprocally) - to meet in a prearranged way
incontrare - to meet by chance, to encounter
ho conosciuto - I met (for the first time)
fare il bagno - to bathe: either swimming OR taking a bath
un dado - a die (one of a pair of dice)
buono a sapere - good to know

Unlike in English, information can be either singular or plural in Italian, depending on how many questions you have:
un' informazione - a piece of information
delle informazione - some information

- Handouts. These are the handouts for this week (click on the links for the handouts):

-Compiti.

1.
Futuro. Read pages 239 and 240. Do esercizi A and B. Practice memorizing conjugations in the futuro. Including some irregular verbs. (click here for answers)

2. Two-way translation
(handout #13). "Alla stazione." Read and practice the sentences on this handout.

Just so you know, here is how you will be using this with a partner next week:
Fold the handout so that Person A sees only one side, the side which starts with a sentence in English. Your partner (Person B) will see only the other side of the same handout, the side which starts with the same sentence in Italian. Person A reads ENGLISH sentence number 1. and will try to translate that into Italian. Person B is looking at the translation in Italian, and so can help with a clue if you get stuck. Then, for sentence 2, Person B will be trying to translate the English sentence into Italian. And so on.

3. You can look at handout 14 ("invitare" yellow). On the back is a dialogue of setting a time to meet. We'll translate this in class together.

4. Listen to the CD unit 7.

5. Follow the pattern, and answer the questions "How long have you (been)...?" making up your own period of time. "I/We have (been) ... since/for ... " Remember to use the present tense and da.
Da quanto tempo sei in Italia? Sono qui da luglio. - How long have you been in Italy? I have been here since July.
Da quanto tempo studi l'italiano? Lo studio da due anni. - How long have you been studying Italian? I have been studying it for two years.
a. Da quanto tempo siete sposati?
b. Da quanto tempo conosci Gina?
c. Da quanto tempo aspetti l'autobus?
d. Da quanto tempo restate all'Albergo Degli Artisti?
e. Da quanto tempo parli al telefonino?
